Autumn Has Arrived – 1st Place
By Annette W.
Smell the woodsmoke and the clove
Smell the apple cider and sugar cookie that looks like a spider
Smell the vanilla chai and pumpkin pie
Autumn has arrived
See the fallen leaves and maple trees
See the pumpkin patch and a lit match
See the oranges and reds and fall market filled with a sea of heads
Autumn has arrived
Hear the talking and the door knocking
Hear the popcorn popping and a child walking
Hear the showtune and the clock tower ringing at noon
Autumn has arrived
Feel the ground under my feet and the old cobblestone street
Feel the rain on my face and my blanket’s embrace
Feel the rough pinecones and the football adorned with sparkly rhinestones
Autumn has arrived
Taste the toffee and cinnamon coffee
Taste the nutmeg and turkey leg
Taste the smoked salmon toast and pot roast
Autumn has arrived
A Young Child During Autumn – 2nd Place
By Ayla S.
A young child during autumn,
Happily waits,
For the ominous fog to arrive,
By the black metal gates.
A young child during autumn,
Impatiently yearns,
For a glass of hot cider,
At school, where she’ll learn;
A young child during autumn,
Is careless and free,
And will frolic in fall foliage,
Then smile with glee.
A young child during autumn,
Visits the patch,
And brings back a pumpkin,
To carve and to scratch.
A young child during autumn,
Will grow old,
But she’ll never forget,
The days that were told.
Leaves – 3rd Place
A backwards poem by Hannah N.
1)Those colorful trees you see are just dying leaves,
so I refuse to believe that
There is life in them.
4)And I know that
Autumn is also the start of beautiful colors,
But
Autumn is the ending of leaves.
(8)Sure it’s sad that
Those poor lifeless leaves are gone for long.
and
Every leaf is just falling to their death.
(12)So you will never hear me say that
I love Autumn leaves.
Read the lines from bottom to top!
(Backwards version)
I love Autumn leaves.
So you’ll never hear me say that
Every leaf is just falling to their death,
and
Those poor lifeless leaves are gone for long.
Sure it’s sad that
Autumn is the ending of leaves,
But
Autumn is also the start of beautiful colors,
4)And I know that
There is life in them,
so I refuse to believe that,
Those colorful trees you see are just dying leaves.
The Fall Nature – 4th Place
By Ahana S.
The sky is getting cold, fall has announced its arrival.
The season, where the leaves play a game of survival.
Red, Orange, Yellow, Science has its way.
Its magic also makes the tidal waves change at the bay.
Isn’t it amazing to witness the change of dusk and dawn?
Which has an effect on when people yawn.
The world is matching the fall vibe.
Goes to show that the earth is full of tribes.
It’s not too hot or too cold.
But unfortunately the leaves turn old.
If only the world could stay like this.
But, a time will come, when the fall season we love so much enters the memories we miss.
Colors – 5th Place
By Kade W.
There’s something different about autumn.
Maybe it’s something that stands out to me,
Or something that I think is definitely out of place,
Or something that isn’t considered autumn at all, like cold snow or vibrant flowers
Maybe it’s the cool air that stands out to me,
The chilly air that leaves you refreshed after the hot summer weather hits
Or maybe it’s the crunching of fallen leaves as you run across the lawn
And maybe, it’s cold mornings and warm afternoons that get you ready for the winter
But to me,
It’s the colors.
When the colors of the leaves change, it’s like the area has been hit with a paintbrush,
Coloring every leaf in vibrant shades of red, orange, yellow, and brown
There will never be a time in fall when I look outside and not see different colored leaves
Every leaf is like a spark, and every pile of leaves is like a raging fire
Autumn is not spring, nor is it summer, or winter
For when you compare a pretty purple flower against a vibrant, shiny yellow leaf, one just stands out more.
