Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, A Review

The Cursed Child is a spinoff to “Harry Potter.”  Published as a book, the story was taken to Broadway.  The play focuses on Harry’s child Albus, and his struggles going to school at Hogwarts. His father plays a big role in his social life, as he saved the wizarding world in an epic battle against Voldemort and his dark army. Albus is often ridiculed about this at Hogwarts, as some kids disagree with the actions that his father made.

Albus and Harry were not the only characters in the play; there were also many other side and main characters. Some include Rose, Scorpius, Delphi, Hermione, Ron and Draco. At times, I really enjoyed that the play brought back many of the characters from the Harry Potter book series. However, there were still many issues. I noticed a lot of characters who were important in the books, like Ron and Draco’s roles were small and they, had  no effect on the play whatsoever. They were simply placed there for comedic relief, or to alter the plot in very small ways. This really shocked me in a way, as in the movies and books they played such big roles.

The play was nothing like the “Cursed Child” we all read and loved.  I often found myself dozing in and out of sleep as the play went on. Many parts of it were just boring dialogue and scene changes that presented no interest to me. All of the interactions between characters were  flat out boring and contributed to the show in no way. In the first five minutes of the show all of the props were already used, so the same things popped up numerous times and were overused.

Overall, I would give this play a two out of five stars. I liked how they incorporated a lot from the books, like bringing Hogwarts and many other characters back.. It was at most times  boring with not much was happening.  If you are considering seeing a play, I suggest you avoid this one.
