Have you ever used AI in school, maybe for some help because your teacher wasn’t cutting it, or that you just didn’t feel like writing? Well, I believe that AI shouldn’t be used in education (mainly schools) because it causes lack of critical thinking with students, cheating, and data and privacy concerns. Because many people are using AI to cheat in important exams, tests, (etc) right now, in the future, it will be almost impossible to get into colleges or jobs. Also, using artificial intelligence will dry out your brain, making you not be able to think for yourself. And lastly by giving AI your information, it can be easily hacked, with your personal information being leaked.
Lack of creativity
The use of AI has diminished our use of creativity and our ability to create new ideas. If students depend too much on AI to do work like problem solving, or generating ideas, they might not fully understand and engage in what they are learning. Relying too heavily on AI could discourage students from thinking critically, exploring new concepts and making mistakes. Furthermore, if AI content is too stiff and formulaic, it may dilute the original thought/idea. Later on, students may begin to follow AI’s patterns rather than making their own.
Academic Misconduct
The leading concerns about the increased involvement of AI in education greatly include cheating and plagiarism. And the use of AI makes it incredibly easy, as all you need to do is type a prompt, and a whole essay is created. “Turnitin referenced a study conducted in Spring 2023 it contributed to with Tyton Partners, showing academic cheating as the number one concern of educators, as high numbers of students revealed they were “likely or extremely likely to use generative AI writing tools, even if they were prohibited.” This means that EVEN THOUGH students know that the use of AI is PROHIBITED, they’ll cheat anyway, which is why we should remove this temptation.
Data and Privacy Concerns:
AI needs data to function, however, if that data were to be leaked, endless amounts of private and confidential information would be out in the open and lead to privacy violations? According to CESA6, “Carelessly entering information into AI models can compromise personal identifiable information (PII), especially if an AI tool suffers a data breach.” If someone’s account was hacked, what is stopping hackers from hacking every person’s account? If personal information was released, there would be no way to get it back. Additionally, since ai is run all by itself, with no one monitoring it, it is essentially on autopilot, with nothing to defend itself with.
Though some might say that AI is good in schools as it can act as a tutor (Individualization and Personalization). AI can be used to help students personally, by addressing their own specific questions and problems. AI can take any prompt and turn it into whatever the student needs and explain in however much detail is needed. As not all information will be processed right when the teacher speaks, AI is a great source as a tutor for students who need help. Additionally, AI is a robot, so it can never get tired and always available, so it is widely accessible.
But this is just not the case because instead of helping students with projects by giving sources or information, it can actually HARM their assignments by producing false material for them. Hallucinations can occur in these models. Hallucinations when AI produces false information, when false info is given out to students as a credible source. Students will be thinking that the wrong is the right, and when accurate information is presented, students will be confused. AI can also bring down a student’s grade, as teachers won’t appreciate inaccurate content. Students should be able to develop the skills to think about the resources they are taking in, and learn how to research and find material THEMSELVES. This is a critical ability to learn, and once again stated, if students learn to rely on AI too much, they could be completely stranded in times where any use of AI is strictly not allowed.
So in conclusion, AI should not be used in education because then students will have a lack of creativity, academic misconduct, and data is vulnerable to attacks. Why let AI think for you? Just think for yourself!
