“Homework stinks.” That’s almost always the first thing people think when someone brings up homework. The value of homework has always been questioned because of all the negatives, such as taking time away from family, sleep, and activities, but could the positives make homework worth it?
Homework has always had a bad reputation, but I believe that it can really benefit all students. I know sometimes you just want to take your homework and throw it across the room, but the only reason teachers assign homework is to help boost our thinking, give us more practice, and to just help us gain knowledge.
Just having homework can boost our thinking. According to the University of San Diego, “Homework improves student achievement and helps us come up with new strategies.” Coming up with new strategies is something that will always help us in life, so it’s best to start learning how when you are younger. Lucky for us, homework is the key to helping us come up with new strategies that boost our thinking.
Practicing what we learn can really help us. Another reason why homework is important is because it can help us practice what we have learned. According to the Thomas B. Fordham Institute, “The learning that does or does not take place in the many hours outside of school has a monumental effect on children’s academic success.” This is why practicing is so important, and why homework is good for you.
Although it can be good for you, it can sometimes be really time consuming. This is often why people don’t like it, because it can interfere with other activities like sports or even just time to hang out with friends. According to Newsela, “Homework came in behind not only socializing but also exercise or sports as well as working for pay.” Homework can make a big impact on a person’s exercise, activities, and well-being.
While that is true, most homework doesn’t take that long. It is only long when people get distracted with other things, which end up making it feel like forever. It is also important to remember that most homework is just a review of what you have learned in class, so it should be pretty easy because you’ve already been taught how to do it. Homework is just there to help us out in our everyday lives. It can get in the way of our other activities, but it helps build up our knowledge that helps us everyday.
At the end of the day, homework is worth it because it can really boost your knowledge, give you practice, and help you out. Even though it may not seem like one of the most exciting things ever, it really helps you and helps you build your overall knowledge.
