Nightmare Before Christmas: A Review

Nightmare Before Christmas: A Review

Disney has gifted the world the perfect holiday movie with Tim Burton’s incredible The Nightmare Before Christmas!

The iconic Nightmare Before Christmas was presented to the public on October 29th, 1993. The story is Fantasy with light romance, featuring characters that are relatable and endearing. These characters combined with a humorous and exciting plot result in a wonderful movie suitable for kids and adults.

This story begins at a place called Halloween Town, which is ruled over by our main character, Jack the Pumpkin King. Jack has ruled Halloween Town for what seems to be an extremely long time, and doesn’t really feel the “scare” of Halloween anymore. His lovable ghost dog, Zero, tries unsuccessfully to cheer him up. “Oh, there’s an empty place in my bones, that calls out for something unknown,” described Jack in a scene, making him more relatable and real.

This incredible movie has many mind blowing twists. One of these is when Jack decides he wants to take Santa Claus’s place. This is both clever and hilarious, and viewers will delight in the image of a skinny skeleton stepping in for a plump and joyous Santa Claus. They will also find it ironic and charming that Jack would give snakes and spiders as Christmas presents.

Though Jack is a skeleton and Halloween Town contains many nightmarish figures, the film’s animation is not as scary as you would expect, making it suitable for children. Most kids will see Jack as a funny figure, due to the fact that he’s very tall and skinny. Like the best heroes, Jack grows in wisdom and in heart during the movie. Most will find it hard to stop before knowing the results of his quest to steal Christmas.

Sally is another character viewers are certain to love. The invention of the town’s mad scientist,  she is the perfect underdog. She tries to convince Jack that Halloween and Christmas should not mix. Sally is also secretly in love with Jack but doesn’t have the courage to tell him. Audiences will cheer when she finds her courage to tell Jack how she feels. Between Jack and Sally and their struggles, viewers will be anxious for the characters, proving just how incredibly heartfelt this movie is.

Overall, The Nightmare Before Christmas is a delightful animated film with many amazing characters. I would recommend it to anyone looking for an entertaining, heartfelt story that is sure to get you in the Christmas spirit!
